Product Safety & Usage Guide: Understanding Expiry, Safe Storage & Skin Reactions

Table of Contents

Your safety matters to us. This guide is here to help you make informed decisions about the products you purchase and use, including how to read expiry dates, understand when a product is no longer safe to use, and know what to do if your skin reacts.

Please read this guide carefully. It applies to all DANG! Lifestyle products and serves as a reference if you store products for a period before first use.

Understanding Product Expiry Dates

What Does an Expiry Date Mean?

Every cosmetic product has a lifespan. Beyond a certain point, active ingredients degrade, preservative systems break down, and the product may no longer be safe or effective to use on your skin.

You will typically find two types of dates on DANG! products:

  • A manufactured or production date, which tells you when the product was made.
  • A best before or expiry date, which indicates the date until which the product is expected to remain stable and effective when stored correctly in its sealed, unopened state.
  • A Period After Opening (PAO) symbol, which looks like an open jar icon and shows a number followed by “M” (e.g. 6M, 12M). This tells you how many months the product remains safe after you first open it.

Important: Unopened Does Not Always Mean Safe

Even a product that has never been opened can expire. Exposure to heat, humidity, and light during storage accelerates this process. An expired product, regardless of whether it has been opened, may contain degraded actives, compromised preservatives, or altered pH, all of which may irritate the skin or cause adverse reactions.

We do not recommend purchasing or using products beyond their stated expiry date, even if they appear visually unchanged.

What to Look for When Purchasing

  • Always check the expiry date on the packaging before purchasing, whether in-store or online.
  • If purchasing a product to store for future use, we recommend allowing sufficient time before the expiry date to allow for your intended storage period plus the PAO period once opened.
  • If an expiry date is missing or illegible on any DANG! product, please note we recommend not purchasing it. Contact us at [email protected] immediately so we can resolve the issue.

Product Shelf Life & Safe Usage Timelines

The following table provides general guidance on the shelf life of common product types. Always refer to the specific date or PAO symbol on your individual product, as these take precedence.

Product Category Unopened After Opening
Face Serums & Actives (Vitamin C, AHA/BHA) 24 months 3 to 6 months
Moisturisers & Creams 24 to 36 months 6 to 12 months
Cleansers & Toners 24 to 36 months 6 to 12 months
Sunscreens 24 months 6 to 12 months
Facial Oils 12 to 24 months 3 to 6 months
Eye Creams 24 months 3 to 6 months

Note: Sunscreens should not be used past their expiry date due to reduced UV protection. Products containing high concentrations of active ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs may lose efficacy faster than the timeframes above, particularly if stored in warm or humid environments. Oxidation and degradation in these formulas can occur even before the stated expiry date.

Using Products Close to Expiry

If your product is approaching its expiry date, use the following guidance to determine whether it is still safe to use:

Signs a product may no longer be safe, regardless of date:

  • A noticeable change in colour, such as darkening, yellowing, or browning (especially in vitamin C serums).
  • An unusual or rancid smell, or any change from the product’s original scent.
  • A change in texture, including separation, curdling, or thickening, that cannot be resolved by shaking.
  • Visible mould, particles, or discolouration inside the container.

If any of the above are present, we recommend discontinuing use and avoiding further application to the skin.

Guidance for Products Still Within Date but Approaching Expiry

  • Continue use if the product shows no signs of deterioration listed above.
  • Prioritise the product in your routine to finish it before the expiry date.
  • Do not apply expired or near-expired products to sensitive areas, broken skin, or skin with active conditions such as eczema or post-procedure skin.
  • Reduce the frequency of use for actives such as exfoliants and retinoids, as degraded formulas may behave unpredictably on the skin.
  1. Skin Reactions: What They Mean and What to Do

Note: This guidance is for general information only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Even with products well within their expiry date, skin reactions can occur. Below is a guide to understanding common reactions and how to respond appropriately. For clients with deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick Types IV to VI), some reactions may present differently and require careful monitoring to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Common Reactions and What They Indicate

Reaction What It Looks Like What It May Mean
Redness / Erythema Flushing, warmth, visible redness (may appear as darkening in deeper tones) Irritation or sensitivity to an ingredient. Can be normal with actives like AHAs or retinoids on first use.
Itching / Stinging Persistent itch or burning sensation May indicate sensitivity or an irritant response. Stinging that persists beyond 30 seconds is a warning sign.
Breakouts / Purging Small whiteheads or congestion in areas where you typically break out Purging from actives like retinoids or AHAs is normal in the first 4 to 6 weeks. New breakouts in unusual areas suggest irritation.
Swelling / Hives Puffiness, raised welts, or urticaria May indicate an allergic-type response. Seek medical attention if swelling affects the lips, eyes, or throat.
Darkening / PIH Brown or ashy patches, especially after inflammation in deeper skin tones Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation triggered by irritation. Stop the product causing irritation immediately.
Dry, Flaky, or Tight Skin Peeling, rough texture, tight feeling Over-exfoliation or barrier disruption. Pause all actives and focus on gentle, occlusive moisturisation.

Immediate Steps to Take in the Event of a Reaction

  • Discontinue use of the product. We do not recommend re-applying to test whether it is the cause.
  • Rinse the affected area gently with cool water for several minutes to remove any residual product.
  • Apply a fragrance-free, gentle moisturiser or barrier cream to soothe the skin. Avoid applying other actives until the reaction fully resolves.
  • Make a note of what you observed: the product used, how long it had been in use, the area affected, and any other products used at the same time. This helps identify the cause.
  • Contact our team within 24 to 48 hours with your observations. We may request photos and will advise on next steps.
  • If you experience severe swelling, difficulty breathing, widespread hives, or symptoms of anaphylaxis, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
  • For PIH or persistent darkening, we recommend consulting a licensed skincare professional or dermatologist. Do not self-treat with additional actives, as this may worsen the pigmentation.

Proper Storage to Protect Product Integrity

How you store your products significantly affects their shelf life and safety. Please follow these guidelines to get the best from your DANG! products:

  • Store all products away from direct sunlight and heat. Bathrooms, while convenient, are often warm and humid, which accelerates ingredient degradation.
  • Keep lids tightly closed after use to minimise exposure to air and bacteria.
  • Do not store products in temperatures above 30°C for extended periods. Some formulas, particularly those with vitamin C or retinoids, benefit from refrigeration.
  • Do not dilute products with water or mix them with products from other brands, as this can compromise the preservative system and introduce contamination.
  • Keep products out of reach of children.

Customers who store products for extended periods before first use assume responsibility for monitoring expiry dates and product condition prior to use. DANG! recommends purchasing products with sufficient lead time to allow for both the intended storage period and the full PAO window once opened.
