The best sunscreen for dark skin, without the white cast

Too many sunscreens were made with lighter skin in mind. On deeper skin tones they leave a grey or purple cast, feel heavy in the heat and end up skipped. Our sunscreen for dark skin was developed to disappear: a clear gel that blends in completely, so wearing SPF every day feels as easy as wearing moisturiser.

Why melanin-rich skin still needs sunscreen

Melanin offers some natural protection, but not enough. UV rays trigger new dark spots, make existing hyperpigmentation darker and break down collagen, which leads to early lines and uneven texture. In the Nigerian sun, daily sunscreen is the single step that protects every other product in your routine. If you’re treating dark marks with our hyperpigmentation range, sunscreen is what keeps them from coming back.

Hydra Glow: a lightweight SPF 50+ sunscreen for face

The Hydra Glow Sun Protection Gel is our everyday sunscreen for face, neck and arms:

  • SPF 50+ PA+++: high, broad-spectrum protection that shields skin from 98% of UVB rays, plus strong UVA protection.
  • Transparent, no white cast: a clear gel that sits invisibly on every skin tone.
  • Hydrating: made with hyaluronic acid and antioxidant vitamin E, so skin stays plump rather than tight.
  • Lightweight: a gel texture that feels comfortable on oily and combination skin, and wears well under makeup.
  • Dermatologist tested and suitable for all skin types.

That makes it a strong pick if you’re looking for a lightweight sunscreen or the best sunscreen for oily skin in a hot, humid climate.

Where sunscreen fits in your routine

Sunscreen is always the last step of your morning skincare routine:

  1. Cleanse with a gentle face wash, such as our Everyday Gentle Foaming Face Wash.
  2. Tone with Beauty Water (Toner).
  3. Treat with a face serum, such as our Vitamin C Concentrated Serum, or a face oil like our Q10 + Vitamin C Face Oil Serum. Vitamin C and sunscreen work best together.
  4. Moisturise with one of our face moisturizers.
  5. Protect with Hydra Glow, 15 to 30 minutes before you go outside.

Using brightening or anti-aging actives makes daily SPF even more important, because they can leave skin more sensitive to the sun. For your body, follow the Restoration Body Moisturizer with sunscreen on exposed arms.

Frequently asked questions

What is sunscreen?

Sunscreen is a skincare product that protects your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The SPF number shows protection against UVB rays, which cause burning, and the PA rating shows protection against UVA rays, which cause darkening and ageing.

Do black people need sunscreen?

Yes. Melanin gives dark skin some natural protection, but not enough to prevent sun damage. Without sunscreen, UV exposure darkens hyperpigmentation, causes uneven tone and speeds up skin ageing. Skin cancer is rarer in dark skin, but it does happen.

Can sunscreen make your skin darker?

No. The sun darkens skin; sunscreen helps prevent it. Some mineral sunscreens leave a grey cast that can make dark skin look ashy, which is why our transparent gel is made to blend in completely.

What is the difference between sunscreen and sunblock?

Today the terms mean almost the same thing. “Sunblock” used to describe mineral formulas that sit on top of the skin, while “sunscreen” described formulas that absorb UV. Now “sunscreen” covers both.

Mineral or chemical sunscreen: which is better for dark skin?

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and often leave a white cast on deeper skin tones. Chemical sunscreens use filters that absorb UV and blend in clear. Hydra Glow uses modern chemical filters, so it gives high protection with no white cast.

How do you apply sunscreen on your face?

Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, after moisturiser and before makeup. Use about two finger-lengths for your face and neck, and spread it evenly, including your ears and hairline. Apply 15 to 30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every 2 hours or after sweating or swimming.

Should I wear sunscreen indoors or at night?

Wear it indoors if you sit near windows, because UVA rays pass through glass. You don’t need sunscreen at night; that’s the time for treatment products instead.

Does sunscreen clog pores?

Heavy, greasy sunscreens can. Hydra Glow is a lightweight gel designed to feel comfortable on oily and acne-prone skin. If your skin is sensitive, patch test on your inner forearm first. For breakouts, explore our acne range.
