In the past, I used really expensive skincare products and wondered why they weren’t working. I made sure they had powerful ingredients in them and most importantly, the product had a long list of ingredients. I had always felt that the more ingredients in a product, the better.
First, I didn’t realize that for people with sensitive skin like me, little is much. I heard using black soap as a mask for 15 minutes every day would give me the GLOW I knew was in my future; FAIL! My skin broke out in rashes so bad, I couldn’t go out for two days.
I heard that sugar scrub was the in thing and would work. I tried it, I ended up at the dermatologist’s clinic. She told me I was destroying my skin barrier with all these over-powerful ingredients and most especially by scrubbing them with beads, I had damaged the most outer layer of skin.
She said to me, stop using anything for two weeks. She recommended a simple face wash without harsh chemicals and also pomegranate seed oil, daily. She said I needed to repair my skin barrier and I must be patient.
When it comes to skincare, I’m not a patient person, I listened to her for 3 days until my friend told me the biggest thing in town was salicylic acid toner and it would do wonders for my face. I asked her to bring one for me on her way back to Nigeria. Immediately she landed, I began to use the product. The second day, I woke up to an itchy face with nano boils spread to my neck.
FUN FACT: You can’t use salicylic acid if you’re allergic to NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Examples of NSAIDs are Aspirin and Ibuprofen. I am allergic to NSAID, so go figure.
Did I go back to the dermatologist? I did.
Did she frown at me like a naughty child? She did.
I was so embarrassed but I had to do what I had to do. She taught me that the skin on the face is thinner than the skin on the body and the only exfoliator that is generally good for people of color is the Mandelic Acid. Due to our excess melanin, dark skin needs to be treated less aggressively than lighter tones. The Mandelic Acid is a right fit as it is powerful but gentle.
Since that episode, I stopped scrubbing my face with anything harder than a 100% cotton towel (which I only do once a week). I realized that I needed patience, not harsh exfoliators for my face to come back and better.
This is why I swear by the gentleness and power of Dang! Ageless 5% Mandelic 3-in-1 Foaming Face Wash . It has made my face smoother, I look younger and I’ve stopped having Acne breakouts on my forehead.
One main benefit of Mandelic acid is that it is more gentle on the skin compared to other AHAs. This makes it an ideal choice for those with sensitive skin. With prolonged use, it can completely remove acne scars while brightening the overall skin tone. Imagine this amazingness paired with Honey (Natural humectant, antioxidants, and anti-microbial), 100% organic Cucumber seed oil (excellent anti-ager), and Green tea extract (gentle exfoliator, balances oily skin, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.)
These are the most gentle yet efficient ingredients you can ever use on your face. What’s more? It cleans out your makeup fast!
I don’t have “coconut head.” From the day I got the first sample of the Dang! Ageless 5% Mandelic 3-in-1 Foaming Face Wash till date (7 months now) no other face wash has touched my face.
